Thailand’s Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) has successfully completed the ISO 29993 certification audit of its training services.
ISO 29993 is the International Organization for Standardization’s standard for learning services outside of formal education, providing a unified model for high-quality, professional operations, as well as a common set of references for an organisation that is conceiving, developing and delivering training.
WINS has been working to assist OAP in the development of a national nuclear security training strategy implementation support plan and professional development activities for Thai nuclear security stakeholders. Focusing on radioactive source security, this project began in January 2020 and included supporting the establishment and sustainability of a nuclear security support centre based at OAP as well as preparing OAP for external certification of its learning service under ISO 29993.
“Achieving ISO 29993 certification is an important milestone in promoting locally sustainable radioactive source security competence,” said WINS Programme Manager Raquel Delgado.
“Gaining full support in participating in the Nuclear Security Capacity Building Programme from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada, with WINS as the central agency responsible for closely and continuously coordinating and cooperating, is considered an important part in driving the OAP’s nuclear and radiation security capacity building mission,” said Mr. Permsuk Sutchaphiwat, Secretary-General, Office of Atoms for Peace.
The project was made possible by the generosity of Global Affairs Canada’s Weapons Threat Reduction Program, in support of international commitments to enhance nuclear security competence, including those set out in INFCIRC 901: Joint Statement on Certified Training for Nuclear Security Management.
Demonstrating Competence and Quality
The ISO 29993 standard can significantly benefit training organisations because it enables them to evaluate their training programmes against professional standards developed by a recognised, respected certifying body. It focuses on the learner, including learning outcomes and evaluation of learning results, to demonstrate evidence of competence and quality. Independent assessment of learning services demonstrates the quality and competence of an organisation and gives confidence to stakeholders and learners alike.
