Ahead of the last Nuclear Security Summit that is taking place on March 31 and April 1, 2016 in Washington D.C., the Nuclear Threat Initiative released its 2016 Nuclear Security Index, which assesses nuclear security conditions across 176 countries and how well countries are protecting against nuclear cyberattack and sabotage. This index finds that progress on reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear terrorism has slowed and major gaps remain in the global nuclear security system. The 2016 NTI Index has become a critical resource and tool for assessing the security of the world’s deadliest materials.
Key findings from the 2016 NTI Nuclear Security Index can be accessible from the NTI Index website, NTIindex.org, and can also be downloaded. The website offers a print report containing NTI observations and recommendations, an overview of the EIU methodology, selected data, and country profiles.
In addition, NTI offers infographics related to nuclear materials security for journalists and social media sharing, as well as a two-minute video about what the NTI Index found about the risks of sabotage at nuclear facilities. Finally, NTI developed a tutorial that seeks to explain key nuclear security issues such as, what is the difference between nuclear and radiological terrorism? Where does illicit trafficking occur? Etc.
