In the Spotlight: Getting Acquainted with WINS Academy Ambassador Camila Araujo

Recently, WINS has had the pleasure of welcoming Camila Araujo to the WINS Academy Ambassador team. Ms Araujo – who is the CEO of Maxim Group – is an Academy Ambassador for Brazil and will strive toward strengthening nuclear security awareness in her country and beyond.

Continue reading the interview with Ms Araujo to learn more about what she studied at the WINS Academy, the driving force for becoming a WINS Academy Ambassador and advice she would give to incoming WINS Academy learners.

What was your elective for the WINS Academy? Why did you choose it?

I have always sought to enhance my professional skills to contribute to safer and more effective practices in nuclear safety and security. The WINS Academy Radioactive Source Security Management course surpassed my expectations, expanding my potential and offering new opportunities in the job market. Additionally, I obtained the WINS Academy certification, which elevated my professional status.

My motivation to become a WINS Academy Ambassador lies in my deep commitment to strengthening the presence of Brazilian professionals in the nuclear security area, prioritising the encouragement of women in the sector, along with my focus on promoting a nuclear security culture globally.

What advice do you have for current WINS Academy learners or those considering enrolling?

For WINS students or prospective enrollees, my advice is to fully take advantage of the resources and opportunities offered by the Academy. Stay focused, participate actively, build professional connections, and apply knowledge to real projects. Be open to continuous learning, as nuclear security is an area in constant evolution.

How has your WINS Academy training shaped your understanding of nuclear security threats and risks?

The WINS Academy training in Radioactive Source Security Management was essential to deepening my understanding of nuclear security threats and risks. It provided a solid foundation for identifying vulnerabilities and taking proactive protective measures. By addressing issues such as the handling of radioactive sources and security measures and procedures, the course prepared me to face real threat situations. Furthermore, it promoted a security mindset, which is crucial in preventing unauthorised access to radioactive materials.

Ultimately, this training is a key component in producing professionals capable of ensuring nuclear security and contributing to protecting the world from radiological threats.

How do you think advancing gender equality, diversity and inclusion would enhance your field?

An inclusive culture enhances collaboration, information sharing, and more effectively strengthens the protection of nuclear materials. Advancing gender equality and diversity enriches our field, bringing diverse perspectives and skills to bear on complex challenges. Therefore, we are not just talking about a question of justice, we are mainly talking about a way to increase excellence and security in our sector.

What advice would you give women who are entering the field?

No one has the power to overshadow a star that was born to shine.” This phrase is my motivation, which I share with you so that you never give up on your dreams.

I am a woman who started my professional journey in a predominantly male field. I faced challenges, from skepticism from my own family to harassment early in my career. However, I turned these adversities into motivation. I dedicated myself to my studies, obtained titles and certifications in the nuclear sector and founded my own company. Today, I am a reference in my country and have expanded my business to Africa.

My message to all women is: no matter how difficult the path may seem, your determination and passion can overcome any obstacle. Believe in yourself, seek knowledge and don’t be afraid to take an unconventional path.

Together, we can shine even brighter and conquer our space and success in all professional areas.
