To ensure the ongoing safety and security of radioactive sources in Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s Nuclear Security Division (NSD) is working on a research project to study the use of new tracking technologies for devices with radioactive sources and their potential to assist faster recovery of lost or stolen sources.
The objective is to study the applicability of new tracking technologies to the Canadian environment, including the costs, benefits and challenges for sources used in industrial radiography and well-logging applications and to look at current international regulatory practices related to tracking technologies.
As part of this research, NSD is sending a survey out to Canadian licensees and their international counterparts, including the IAEA, regulators, WINS members and other relevant stakeholders. The purpose of the survey is to gather information on stakeholders’ use of tracking systems and associated technologies for Category 2 and 3 radioactive sources in transport, specifically those used in industrial radiography and well-logging.
