WINS Workshop on Effective Nuclear Security Regulations
We held a workshop on Effective Nuclear Security Regulations in Ottawa, Canada from 7-9 February 2017 in cooperation with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The discussions addressed how to find a balance between prescriptive and performance-based regulation; ensure regulatory independence; consult with stakeholders and increase public confidence; and develop indicators to measure the effectiveness of regulations. The discussions and key findings will support revisions of WINS-related publications, including the WINS Academy Elective on Nuclear Security Regulation.
WINS Academy Training Course for Scientists, Technicians and Engineers
We organised a 2.5 day training event for Scientists, Technicians and Engineers (STEs) in Vienna from 27 February – 1 March 2017. The purpose of the training was to support the development of security competence for STEs. The training was derived from the WINS Academy Elective for STEs, and used discussion, case studies and table-top exercises to further explore areas and issues of direct relevance for the participants. Karen Kaldenbach, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Ed Waller, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), and Dan Johnson, WINS, were instructors for the training.

WINS STAFF UPDATE
Dan Johnson, current Head of the WINS Academy, will be moving to the United States in Q4 of 2017. As the Senior Advisor for North America, he will focus on developing strategic partnerships and working with WINS stakeholders. With his move to the new position, WINS will have a vacancy for a Professional Training Manager at our offices in Vienna.
Upcoming WINS Workshops
Building on the successes of the 2014 Insider Threat Summit in Vienna and the 2016 Homegrown Violent Extremism (HVE) workshop in London, we are organising a follow-up event on Countering HVE in the Nuclear Sector: Threats and Mitigation Strategies in April in Vienna. Key outcomes of the discussions will be consolidated in WINS guidance and training material that will be made available to practitioners in the nuclear sector. For more info, view the announcement.
