WINS and ASEAN Centre for Energy Enter Groundbreaking Agreement

WINS is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) to promote capacity building and the professionalisation of individuals responsible for nuclear security in the ASEAN region.

The topics covered by the agreement include nuclear security management, including cybersecurity and radioactive source security management, as well as any other areas of mutual interest including nuclear security culture, security of advanced reactors, incident management, nuclear security regulations.

ACE is an intergovernmental organisation that works to promote the energy interests of the 10 ASEAN Member States. The Centre’s aim is to supply information and know-how to help ensure that programmes and policies related to energy align with the region’s economic expansion and environmental sustainability.

The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding occurred within the context of the ASEAN Energy Business Forum, which examined the regions sustainable energy pathways over the course of three days. One of these pathways is clean nuclear energy.

Commenting about the newly inked agreement, Mr Lars van Dassen, Executive Director of WINS, said, “At this critical juncture, WINS and the Centre for Energy are signing this landmark agreement to support knowledge exchange, professional networking, capacity building and training on all aspects of nuclear security in civilian nuclear energy. WINS is well-positioned to contribute to the region’s nuclear energy transition, particularly in the areas of small modular reactor technologies and multi-source power plants.”

“Nuclear energy could play a key role in ASEAN energy transition towards sustainable energy supply while ensuring the energy resiliency as the baseload generation. Therefore, WINS will play an important role to build the capacity of the ASEAN Member States on nuclear security. Our cooperation with WINS will be critical to cover not only the physical protection of nuclear facilities and materials but also the security of non-nuclear radioactive sources, import-export controls at national borders and others,” said Dr Nuki Agya Utama, the Executive Director of ACE.
