On October 5-7, 2015, WINS participated in the the academic workshop entitled “Nuclear Politics: Intersection of Policy and Technology.” in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The workshop was organized by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in cooperation with Brazil’s Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN). The workshop was integrated into the International Nuclear Atlantic Conference (INAC) also held in Sao Paulo. The event offered an opportunity for international experts and representatives of Brazil’s policy, technical, scientific and academic communities to engage in discussions on nuclear security, nuclear safeguards, and nuclear energy.
During the workshop, special emphasis was placed on nuclear security education. Speakers representing the IAEA, Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS), WINS, and World Nuclear University provided valuable information to the Brazilian academic community on the educational opportunities that exist in the field of nuclear security. Daniel Johnson represented WINS and presented on Effective Nuclear Security Governance. PNS grantees from the United States, Nigeria, and Morocco shared their experiences in advancing nuclear security education in their respective universities. The interactions that took place during the workshop highlighted new opportunities for deeper collaboration between the Brazilian academic community and international partners in the field of nuclear security.
