Celebrating 15 Years of WINS: Anniversary Event and Launch of Nuclear Security 2.0

This week, the World Institute for Nuclear Security celebrated its 15th anniversary with a dinner reception, followed by the launch of the Nuclear Security 2.0: The Post-24th February 2022 (Dis)order and its Implications for Nuclear Security.

During his opening remarks, Lars van Dassen, Executive Director of WINS, said, “This event marking WINS’ 15th Anniversary provides the perfect opportunity to showcase WINS as a proactive organisation that can quickly respond to the ever-evolving needs of the global nuclear security community. This is highlighted in our new Nuclear Security 2.0 Special Report.”

WINS was founded in October 2008 after a series of international consultations and discussions pinpointed a gap in nuclear security knowledge dissemination globally. The 15th Anniversary celebration event presented the opportunity for individuals who were fundamental to WINS’ establishment and development to make remarks, including the following:

-William H. Tobey, Chair of WINS
-Charles Curtis, NTI President Emeritus
-Roger Howsley, Former Executive Director of WINS
-Nancy Jo Nicholas, Associate Laboratory Director at Los Alamos National Laboratory

During his presentation and launch of Nuclear Security 2.0 at the event, Mr. van Dassen reviewed WINS’ past, present and future activities. With more than 7,500 Members worldwide in 162 countries, WINS has held more than 250 international events and workshops, published 38 international best practice guides, and circulated more than 50,000 copies of its publications.

Mr van Dassen also introduced the audience to the Nuclear Security 2.0: The Post-24th February 2022 (Dis)order and its Implications for Nuclear Security publication, which outlines the four main factors shaping nuclear security:

-Nuclear Sector Workers
-Threat Methodology
-International Cooperation
-Vendors & Client States

Based on the changes to the new nuclear security order, the publication also proposes actions that WINS can take going forward.
