Chair of WINS Board Announces Establishment of Charles Curtis Award for Excellence in Nuclear Security

The Chair of the Board of the World Institute for Nuclear Security is pleased to announce a new award for excellence in nuclear security.

The award is named after the co-founder of the World Institute for Nuclear Security, Mr Charles Curtis. Mr Curtis was the founding president of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a Washington-based nonprofit, nonpartisan global security organization focused on reducing nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity. Prior to NTI, he held senior positions across the U.S. government, including at the U.S. Department of Energy, where he had direct programmatic responsibility for all of the department’s energy, science, technology and national security programs.

The announcement of this award coincides with the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS) 2024: Shaping the Future.

“Charles Curtis has had an illustrious career in nuclear security. The award is intended to both recognise his extraordinary achievements and ensure that those who contribute to nuclear security are also recognised and celebrated,” said William Tobey, Chair of the Board of WINS.

Commenting on the announcement of the award, Charles Curtis remarked, “I am thrilled that WINS, an organisation NTI founded, has created this award to celebrate the achievement of professionals in the nuclear security domain. As the world becomes less secure, and the capabilities of threat actors more advanced, our shared challenges are immense. We therefore must recognise and celebrate those who rise to the occasion and serve the cause of reducing the risk for all humanity.”

The award will be made by the Board of WINS based on receipt of nominations from around the world. The announcement of each future award recipient will coincide with the IAEA General Conference of the Member States held in that year.
