Day 1 – Best Practices for the Secure Transport of Radioactive Material

WINS implemented  a three-day online Workshop so that international experts could share best practices that support the secure transport of radioactive material. The outcome of the Workshop will serve as the basis for the development of a new WINS International Best Practice Guide on this topic.

The Workshop addressed the following issues:

  • Development and implementation of legal and regulatory frameworks for the secure transport of radioactive material
  • Key methods supporting threat assessment and risk reduction, including risk reduction during an active conflict
  • Vulnerability assessment
  • Ensuring effective coordination, cooperation and communication among stakeholders and supporting an effective nuclear security culture
  • Sustainability, training and capacity building
  • Development and implementation of transport security plans
  • Technological advances in tracking and monitoring equipment

The workshop was facilitated by Rhonda Evans and Nataliia Klos, WINS.

The first day of the Workshop was held on 25 February 2025 from  14:00 -17:30 CET.

Our special guests for the first day of the workshop who addressed the development of the legal and regulatory framework were:

  • Marc Fialkoff, ORNL, United States
  • Andrew Smith, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Canada
  • Lynn Ninsiima, Atomic Energy Council, Uganda
  • Soratos Tantideeravit, Office of Atoms for Peace, Thailand

The experts who addressed threat assessment and risk reduction, including risk reduction during an active conflict were:

  • Mike Molson, Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Canada
  • Zinaida Koshkina and Serhii Filovets, Izotope, Ukraine
