Nuclear Security Considerations for Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants

This WINS International Best Practice Guide outlines the stages of decommissioning, the potential nuclear security risks and nuclear security arrangements to be implemented at each stage of decommissioning, including changing requirements for information security, cybersecurity, and physical protection systems. This Guide also examines how to re-evaluate nuclear security requirements as decommissioning progresses and the inventory of nuclear and other radioactive material is reduced and the potential consequences from theft or sabotage change over time.

This Guide also contains a Self-Assessment Questionnaire that can be used to answer questions about nuclear security considerations during decommissioning of nuclear power plants. The results of the Self-Assessment Questionnaire can then be applied to the five-level Maturity Scale in the Guide.
