Security in the Civil Nuclear and Aviation Sectors – Identifying Transferable Best Practices

Volume 1: Research Summary & Recommendations

This research project compares the evolution and future security challenges faced by the civil nuclear and aviation sectors with the purpose of identifying transferable best practices between them. The research study, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, has comprised a comprehensive analysis of the publicly available information on aviation and civil nuclear security.

Completed in consultation with experienced practitioners in both sectors and incorporating the insight of countless individuals with responsibilities for aviation and nuclear security, this research programme is the most comprehensive effort ever undertaken to benchmark security in these critical sectors, determine root causes of any differences, and identify opportunities for cross-sector improvement.

This volume summarises the overall conclusions of the research and provides recommendations for further work to identify cost-effective and achievable opportunities for cross-sector improvement. This summary of the research is supported by other volumes that address specific issues associated with the research.
