This WINS International Best Practice Guide introduces important issues specific to end-of-life management of radioactive sources. It considers the security implications arising from disused radioactive sources and discusses the current best practices in relation to a national strategy for management of disused sources and considers all the available options including reuse, recycling, return, long-term storage and final disposal. It also examines best practice in relation to proper management of disused radioactive sources to ensure that they do not become vulnerable to use by threat actors who wish to carry out malicious acts.
This Guide also contains a Self-Assessment Questionnaire that can be used to answer questions about the effectiveness of your organisation’s management of disused radioactive sources. The results of the Self-Assessment Questionnaire can then be applied to the five-level Maturity Scale in the Guide.
