WINS co-hosted a lunchtime side event on Women in Nuclear Security from 12:30 to 14:00 on Thursday, 13 February 2020. Held in collaboration with the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the World Nuclear Association, this event highlighted current initiatives to strengthen the role of women in nuclear security.
The event included a discussion of lessons learned from the WINS Roundtable on Gender and Nuclear Security and the broader WINS Gender Champions Programme, perspectives from a participant in the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Voices of Nuclear Security (VoNS) project, and reflections from NTI’s Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy efforts.
The event was designed to contribute to an active and informed discussion about concrete proposals to increase female participation at all levels and in all areas of nuclear security, raise awareness of identified challenges to greater participation and demonstrated successful actions to overcome them, and thereby provide strategies and tools for ICONS participants to promote and increase gender parity in their own institutions and to strengthen and sustain their national system with a more diverse and inclusive sector.
Speakers shared their experiences and perspectives on ways to increase gender parity in nuclear security as part of a panel discussion, after which they took questions from the audience. The event was moderated by representatives from Canada and the Netherlands, two countries that have provided support to these initiatives.Lunch was served at the event.
