Background
WINS designed its Gender Champions Programme in 2018 to promote a diverse and inclusive nuclear security workforce and support the full participation of women in the sector. The programme is supported by the Government of Canada and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.
WINS is taking action to promote the increased participation of women in nuclear security and meet the objective shared by many leaders in the sector, including the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency: achieving gender parity in nuclear.
WINS encourages women to engage in nuclear security and radioactive source security management through completion of the WINS Academy Certification Programme. WINS includes female subject matter experts in all of its events and actively promotes the full participation of women in workshops and training programmes.
WINS is an International Gender Champion and a Gender Champion for Women in Nuclear Policy. WINS is in active partnership with Women in Nuclear, Global as well as the Group of Friends for Women in Nuclear, a group of Vienna-based Ambassadors who advocate for greater representation of women in nuclear.
Objectives the webinar
In 2019, WINS published a Special Report on Gender and Nuclear Security based on the contributions of a wide variety of experts that support nuclear security and gender equality initiatives. Two of those experts - Naida Dzigal, President of the IAEA Chapter of Women in Nuclear, and Hubert Foy, Director of the African Center for Science and International Security (AFRICSIS) - are joining us for the webinar.
The purpose of the webinar is to report on the main findings of the Special Report on Gender and Nuclear Security and to discuss the good practices identified that can support the increased participation of women in nuclear security.
The webinar is an opportunity for all participants to discuss the findings and conclusions with our panel of experts as well as exchanging opinions and comments.
Speakers
Naida Dzigal is an analyst with 8 years of working experience in the fields of Microscopy, Spectroscopy, Youth Leadership, International Relations and Program Management. She has a doctorate degree (Technical Physics) from Technische Universität Wien and a Masters degree in Physics from Imperial College London. Since December 2018 she has taken on the voluntary role of Women in Nuclear IAEA president, and has been a member of WiN since 2013.
Hubert Foy is the Founding Director and Senior Research Scientist of the African Centre for Science and International Security, headquartered in Accra-Ghana. Mr. Foy was previously the Director of McFoys International, a U.S.-based Nonproliferation Research Consultancy on nuclear and space developments in Africa and the Middle East. He has worked at the Centre for Accelerator-based Research and Energy Physics of the University of Oslo, the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, the Institute for Security Studies, and the Planetary System Laboratory of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His research focuses on nuclear security; nonproliferation and arms control; disarmament verification; global missile systems proliferation, and dual-use space assets.
