Virtual Tabletop Exercise - Responding to Nuclear Security Incidents during Transport: Encouraging a More Diverse Workforce (EMEA and Pacific edition)

21 March 2023 - 21 March 2023 Online, Public Event (Registration required)

Applications for this event are closed
Workshop on autonomous and remotely operated systems: Benefits and challenges to nuclear security

Background

Are you interested in advanced reactor technology, cybersecurity, transport security, and response in the nuclear context?

Did you know that women and people from diverse gender identities represent less than 5% of the workforce in these areas?

Don’t miss our virtual tabletop exercise, where you will have the chance to play a nuclear security role and break down stereotypes about what a nuclear security expert looks like.

The World Institute for Nuclear Security, in collaboration with the UK’s Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), designed a virtual tabletop exercise (TTX) to give participants from underrepresented gender identities the opportunity to engage in the response to a fictional nuclear security incident.

A tabletop exercise is a discussion-based activity where team members meet in an informal setting to discuss their potential roles during a fictional incident or emergency and their responses to a particular situation. This virtual TTX was developed to highlight some of the various roles in nuclear security and showcase the competencies needed to respond to complex scenarios.

The TTX was designed around scenarios associated with advanced reactor technology, cybersecurity, and transport security, all areas of significant underrepresentation of women and people with diverse gender identities.

WINS’ partner in developing the TTX, NTS, is a leading provider of safe, secure and reliable nuclear and radioactive material transport services. As part of the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, NTS has decades of experience in securely transporting nuclear material within the UK and around the world by land and sea.

The UK’s Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is also supporting our tabletop exercise with their experts. The CNC is the armed police force in charge of protecting civil nuclear sites and nuclear materials in England and Scotland.

Audience

Our focus on inviting people from underrepresented groups in the nuclear security sector allows us to challenge traditional ideas of what a nuclear security expert looks like, encourage organisations to consider a diverse pool of practitioners and thereby expand the global pool of nuclear security professionals.

Female practitioners from diverse backgrounds and people with diverse gender identities were strongly encouraged to apply.

Process

WINS and NTS hosted two separate virtual TTX experiences to accommodate participants from different time zones. Each was each designed for up to 20 participants. The TTX was facilitated by experts from WINS, NTS UK  and UK CNC.

Date: 21 March 2023, 9:00-12:30 CET

(Do you prefer a later time? Check out our EMEA and Americas edition)

Duration: 3.5 hours

Language: English

Registration: After registering on the WINS website and confirmation of acceptance of the participant by WINS, each participant received a link to the Zoom meeting.
