Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy Celebrates its Second Anniversary

WINS congratulates Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy on its second anniversary. The network has already served as an important catalyst for change, and we look forward to their continued leadership in this important area.

WINS’ own experience as a Gender Champion illustrates the impetus that GCNP can provide to an organisation.

Since becoming a Gender Champion in 2018, WINS has prioritised the inclusion of women in WINS workshops and WINS Academy courses to improve the gender balance. The same year, WINS launched its own Gender Champion Programme.

An important milestone in 2019 was the publication of WINS’ Special Report on Gender in Nuclear Security following a survey and roundtable exploring the topic. WINS has expanded on its initial commitments to include:

  • Convening events with key experts to discuss and explore additional initiatives we can take to increase the participation of women in nuclear security.
  • Highlighting the full range of roles and competency profiles that reflect the diversity of the nuclear security sector.
  • Identifying areas where women are underrepresented and measures that will improve their participation based on a competency framework.

As an initiative bringing together nuclear policy leaders, Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy has provided support and resources for all 60 of its members to break down gender barriers and make gender equality a working reality. Together we’ll continue striving to ensure a more diverse and inclusive nuclear policy field.
