What was your elective for the WINS Academy? Why did you choose it?
I decided to choose the fundamental module of nuclear security. I believe that one of the essential tools in all processes that involve ionising radiation is to achieve a solid safety and security framework.
What inspired you to become a WINS Academy Ambassador?
What inspired me to become a WINS Ambassador is being able to foster a culture of nuclear security in my country. At this moment, along with other academics and trade organisations, we are promoting the development of a nuclear security law for Colombia and being part of WINS is not only a great honour, it is also an opportunity to expand my knowledge and strengthen ties with professionals from other regions of the world.
What advice do you have for current WINS Academy learners or those considering enrolling?
I would recommend that they give great value to the academic information in the courses and that they think about how to apply it in their countries. You have to take advantage of the multiple training areas that WINS offers! Additionally, my suggestion is to repeat the evaluations in the chapters several times until each concept is completely clear.
How has your WINS Academy training shaped your understanding of nuclear security threats and risks?
I live in a country in which there are armed groups and one of the great fears that citizens have is the possibility of a terrorist act against a nuclear facility. It is very important to teach about how nuclear security is a very effective global priority for the prevention and management of potential malicious acts. The knowledge I have acquired at the WINS Academy has influenced the way I now think about how small modular reactor (SMR) projects could be developed in the future in remote areas of my country, where access to electricity is very limited.
Gender equality must be a priority issue in the nuclear sector. Gender should not be a barrier to being part of the nuclear industry.
How do you think advancing gender equality, diversity and inclusion would enhance your field?
Gender equality must be a priority issue in the nuclear sector. Gender should not be a barrier to being part of the nuclear industry. Women have a lot of talent to contribute and I believe that we must all work so that they have the legitimate space that corresponds to them.
What advice would you give women who are entering the field?
More than giving them advice, I would make two requests: the first is that when they feel a macho attitude or that it violates their rights, please report it, knowing that many men are willing to support them. And second, it is important that they never give up promoting gender inclusion in the nuclear sector.
