We are delighted to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) and WINS to establish cooperation in areas related to nuclear security relevant to the use of nuclear energy, applications and technology.
Under this new MoU, WINS and KNRA will be able to support information sharing and exchange, networking and to proactively facilitate the wider awareness and understanding of nuclear security issues in the region. WINS will also provide support for gender equality, diversity and inclusion outcomes in the design and delivery of activities implemented within the scope of this agreement.
The signing ceremony took place during the week of the IAEA’s 68th General Conference, held 16-20 September 2024 in Vienna, Austria. Mr James Keter Chumba, Director General of KNRA, and Mr Lars van Dassen, Executive Director of WINS, signed the agreement at the Conference. Also in attendance of the signing ceremony was Ambassador Maurice Makoloo, Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative.
In commenting on the agreement with KNRA, Mr. van Dassen said, “WINS is delighted to sign this milestone agreement with our Kenyan partners to expand WINS’ scope of work in the region as part of our mission to enhance security globally. We look forward to this cooperation and the development of a common agenda for strengthening nuclear security and finding ways of using nuclear security as an enabler for broader regional cooperation with Kenya as our key partner.”
We would also like to express our gratitude to Mr Isaac Mundia, Director of Nuclear Safety at KNRA’s Protection & Resource Centre, and Ms Mercy Muthoni Muriithi, Radiation Protection Officer at KNRA, for their crucial role in facilitating and supporting the initiation of the relationship between WINS and KNRA.
