Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy has released its Impact Report 2019. The report covers the Gender Champions’ level of success at upholding the Panel Parity pledge as well as their SMART targets.
“We’re pleased to see the progress that has been made, and more importantly, to have data to measure against in future,” said Dr Roger Howsley, one of the 50 Gender Champions.
“The work of the GCNP complements the work that WINS is doing within its own Gender Champions Programme to increase the participation of women in nuclear security from the current low levels of between 5-20%. WINS’ gender equity targets are set at 30% in the areas of our WINS Academy Certification Programme, female subject matter experts and participation of women in our events. We are on track to meet and exceed these targets by the end of 2020. We are inspired by the IAEA Director General, who has made clear that gender parity means 50% women, so we know we should be aiming even higher in all of our programmes.”
The majority of Gender Champions (74 percent) were successful in upholding their common commitment to avoid speaking on single-gender panels, already marking a significant impact. Nearly two-thirds reported they had completed their gender equity targets.
The network continues to grow and develop towards becoming a self-supporting instrument for knowledge and resource sharing. As Gender Champions advance gender equity within their own organisations, they also strengthen the resolve of their peers and allies to do the same.
