Helping licensees assess the maturity of their security programme and measure their security culture effectiveness.
At the end of last year, we held a WINS Festive Competition in which we asked our Members to tell us why nuclear security mattered to them, and we then held a prize draw. The Members were awarded a range of prizes from scholarships for professional certification to WINS swag. Since then Members from all over the globe have received their gifts, and we have showcased our winners on our social media platforms. Here are a couple of the winners and what they had to say about nuclear security:
Ali Alkis, who is a PhD student at Hacettepe University in Turkey and a Nuclear Scholar in the UK Nuclear Security Culture Programme, is pictured below with the WINS gift set.
Why nuclear security matters to Mr Alkis:
“At this point, as a Turkish PhD student, I attach great importance to nuclear security. Turkey can be a stronger member of the international nuclear security regime, especially with the upcoming Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in 2023. Only with a strong nuclear security culture and a well-established nuclear security approach, we can enjoy the benefits of nuclear energy securely.”
The same day Mr Alkis received his gift set, he also received news that he passed the WINS Academy Foundation Module.
Another prize recipient is Luan Qafmolla, who has spent approximately 30 years working in transporting radioactive and nuclear materials in Albania.
Why nuclear security matters to Mr Qafmolla:
“Because I have about 45 years working with RN materials and would like to share and transmit these experiences to the young generation in my country. Also, I would like to have safe and secure Albanian institutions according to the managing of RNM.”
Kiyingi Brian, who is working as a Radiation Safety Officer in Uganda, also received a WINS flask as part of the Festive Competition.
Why nuclear security is important to Mr Brian:
“Having taken part and completed the certificate as a nuclear radiation professional, I have learnt the need to have well established nuclear security infrastructure and the masses to be sensitised on the same. Nuclear security is part and parcel of our everyday lives. And, on that note, I’ll always keep participating in the related learning forums.”
Mr Fakorode Oluwafemi Kola, a Staff Officer at Nigeria Customs Service, received his WINS flask. He said that for him, the importance of nuclear security cannot be overemphasised as he works as a specialist in non-intrusive inspection technology.
