The WINS Academy Ambassadors met for their annual online meeting 8 June, under the dual theme of highlighting the importance of climate change and the role civil nuclear has to play in achieving carbon net zero.
“Current civil nuclear technologies have contributed to stemming temperature increases over the past 20 to 30 years, and nuclear can have a continued role in mitigating climate change as demand for electricity grows,” Head of the WINS Academy Roland Fletcher said. “Applying this potential will require us to consider the continued security of nuclear and other radioactive materials.
Mr John Barrett — Ph.D., ICD.D, President of Portolan Global Inc. and WINS Board Member—was a special guest speaker, addressing the topic of “The net zero carbon landscape: Experiences and foresight on the foreseeable changes for nuclear energy and nuclear security”.
Ambassadors from Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America shared their views about climate change as well as what will be required from a nuclear security perspective. These included Ms. Gabriela Acosta from the Argentinian Nuclear Regulator; Mr. Mehl Douglas of the South African National Nuclear Regulator; Dr. Alpana Goel of Amity University in India; and Ms. Stacy Snook, from Sellafield Ltd in the UK. The group also had a fruitful discussion about the steps that will be needed to maintain nuclear security while achieving climate change objectives.
