WINS Hosts Nuclear Security-Themed Theatre Event

WINS hosted a new theatre production in Vienna on 12 February 2020. The production, titled “Pay Up or Melt Down”, centred on a cyber-crisis at the fictional Sweetwater Nuclear Power Plant.

More than 100 diplomats, representatives of government and other conference attendees from over 20 countries joined together to enjoy a thought-provoking evening of theatre that examined issues and attitudes regarding nuclear security. Between scenes, a professional facilitator guided discussions with the audience about the topics raised in the play.

Dr Roger Howsley, Executive Director of WINS, opened the event. Referring to the results of WINS’ “State of Nuclear Security in 2020” survey, Dr Howsley pointed out that cybersecurity is the top area of concern reported by respondents. A cyberattack, he added, offers special challenges as it is an area that cannot be seen, smelled or touched – not unlike radiation.

Participants found the scenario compelling and appreciated the discussion that it provoked.

“The WINS theatre event ‘Pay Up or Melt Down’ provided an engaging approach to focus on the evolving threat to nuclear security: cybersecurity,” said Julia Gibson, Nuclear and Radiological Security Project Leader at Canada’s Weapons Threat Reduction Program Division. “By all accounts, this interactive performance was very well received and served to reinforce the message that not just at the fictional Sweetwater Nuclear Power Plant, but internationally, there is a vital need for strong nuclear security culture.”

The full event report will be available soon.
