“Big Data in Motion; from Hindsight to Insight”
Presentation by Dr Roger Howsley, Executive Director of the World Institute for Nuclear Security
13 November 2014 – 17:00 in Vienna International Centre M07
It is easy to forget that NMC&A and safeguards systems were established decades before the introduction of computers, as were the methods for recording the movement of nuclear materials outside facilities during transport operations. In most situations, NMC&A systems probably had very limited use to support the timely detection of nuclear material losses or theft and therefore contributed little to the prevention of security-related incidents. But in the last 20 years the technology that supports the detection and analysis of nuclear materials and the ability to track the movement of assets and people has changed dramatically, and the power to analyse huge amounts of data in near-real-time is routine in many fields, including telecommunications, the financial markets and other sectors that need high levels of situational awareness. The methods and associated technology is usually referred to as Data Analytics and when the data need to be analysed in near-real-time it is referred to as “Big Data in Motion”.
The seminar is organised by the United Nations Vienna Nuclear Young Generation (UN-NYG). UN-NYG is an association which gathers and supports young professionals from the nuclear field working in Vienna based UN Organisations. UN-NYG aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, networking and professional integration of its members among themselves and in the broader framework of nuclear UN related activities and expertise. It is a recognised club of the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
