Background
WINS designed its Gender Champions Programme in 2018 to promote a diverse and inclusive nuclear security workforce and support the full participation of women in the sector. The programme is supported by the Government of Canada and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.
WINS is an International Gender Champion and a Gender Champion for Women in Nuclear Policy. WINS is in active partnership with Women in Nuclear Global as well as the Group of Friends for Women in Nuclear, a group of Vienna-based ambassadors who advocate for greater representation of women in nuclear.
The WINS Gender Programme is designed around outreach efforts to advance its key objectives, which include increasing female participation to 30% by the end of 2020.
The Government of Norway has funded WINS to increase the professional participation of women from OECD ODA countries in radioactive source security management to build capacity and strengthen and sustain radioactive source security through development of a diverse and inclusive workforce.
One of the ways that WINS intends to achieve this goal is to promote greater professional participation in radioactive source security management by exposing a wider audience to female leaders and subject matter experts in specific fields.
In Part 2 of the webinar series, experts in radioactive source security shared their experience in identifying opportunities for career growth, training and certification for different roles and functions related to radioactive source security. The webinar was co-moderated by Rhonda Evans, Lead for the WINS Gender Champions Programme and Ms Patricia Godoy Kain, an international expert in radioactive source security. Our special guests for the webinar were: Mr Christian Elechosa, Argentina Regulatory Authority; Ms Primerose Ruhukwa, Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe; Mr Armando Macias, Director – Radiaciȯn Aplicada a la Industria (RAISA) – Mexico; and Ms Euridice Rioja, Head of Radiation Safety and Security – Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán" – Mexico.
Objectives
- To discuss the different types of role and functions within different institutions that are responsible for radioactive source security including end users and regulatory bodies
- To identify the percentage of women currently performing these roles and functions
- To identify the competency framework for the different roles and responsibilities for radioactive sources security
- To share experiences about different opportunities for career growth training and development to support competence
- To identify how to achieve sustainable capacity building in this area and achieve the goal of greater gender diversity
