WINS Highlights Transferable Best Practices between Civil Nuclear and Aviation Security

WINS Executive Director Dr Roger Howsley presented a major benchmarking study comparing security in the civil nuclear and aviation sectors at ICONS as part of a technical session on Advances in Nuclear Security Research and Development.

The research study, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, compares the evolution of and future security challenges faced by the civil nuclear and aviation sectors with the purpose of identifying transferable best practices between them.

The report sets out a 10-point plan that the IAEA could adopt through the development of norms and voluntary arrangements to generate real change.

Dr Howsley’s presentation can be seen here. The Research Summary was published last week and is available to WINS members on our website. The nine supporting volumes will be available in the coming weeks.

Completed in consultation with experienced practitioners in both sectors and incorporating the insight of countless individuals with responsibilities for aviation and nuclear security, this research programme is the most comprehensive effort ever undertaken to benchmark security in these critical sectors, determine root causes of any differences, and identify opportunities for cross-sector improvement.
